Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families Awarded $10,000 in National Contest
The Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families (located in suburban Harrisburg) has been awarded $10,000 toward its new playground project. The Shelter was one of six finalists in the “Ultimate Neighborhood Give Back Challenge” sponsored by Guaranteed Rate, one of the 10 largest retail mortgage lenders in the U.S.
Mark Totaro, Executive Director of Catholic Charities that operates the shelter said, “We are thrilled to be selected as a top six finalist and receive $10,000 from the Ty Pennington Ultimate Neighborhood Give Back Challenge for a playground at the Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families. Considering the competition and over 100 worthy organizations vying for these monies.”
The award will not cover the full cost of the playground project that is expected to be approximately $15,000. Additional local donations are hoped for. There is hope that they will be received as the preparation and installation of the playground is slated to begin the week of September 8.
Hillary Hoover is the Program Director at the Shelter and appeared in the short video that was submitted to the contest. She commented, “We have been without a playground for over two years since we moved to our new location as our old playground set was deemed unsafe to move. We are so happy to provide the much needed recreational area for our children who deserve this.”
The Shelter submitted an application via the Challenge’s FaceBook app and was selected as one of the six finalists. Final voting for the contest concluded on July 29. Entries were judged on three criteria: impact to the community, a plan to execute the idea, and the number of votes received.
“The Shelter has a great impact on the community since it is the only place that allows families to stay together when they are in crisis. This is critical for the families and especially the children,” said Christopher Meehan, Director of Development for Catholic Charities of Harrisburg. Meehan can be contacted at (717) 657-4804 ext 284 for those wanting more information on how to help the shelter.
The playground project is part of additional renovation and construction plans at the Saint Samuel Center – the home for Interfaith Shelter, Lourdeshouse Maternity Home, and Evergreen House (for women recovering from addiction). Plans include new handicapped-accessible bedrooms and bathrooms, a new elevator, indoor and outdoor ramps, and other building and technology upgrades.
Opened in 1992 and operated by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Harrisburg, the Interfaith Shelter for Homeless Families is the only shelter in the Cumberland/Dauphin/Perry County region that keeps families together during a homeless crisis. In addition to temporary housing, families at the shelter are provided with meals, case management, transportation, job-hunting and training tips, and assistance with obtaining safe and stable housing. Last year, 393 clients (from 136 families) stayed at the facility. Since the shelter opened in 1992, the program has served more than 11,000 clients.
